“Maggie?” Maya said when she answered the door a half hour after getting home. She was tired, but she still needed to spend a few hours baking before she could get to bed. When someone had knocked at the front door, she couldn’t think who it would be at this hour. Now Maggie was standing on her front porch, looking so woebegone, she waved her right in. “What’s wrong?” she asked when Maggie was seated at the kitchen table with a glass of lemonade.

“It’s gone. All our savings.”

“What do you mean?”

“Bart emptied our bank account. He’s been staying out until all hours, going to work in the morning and doing it all over again. I went to take money out for groceries tonight and checked the balance on our savings account. It’s at zero.”

A chill ran down Maya’s spine. That didn’t sound good. “I saw him a half hour ago at the re-enactment meeting.”

Maggie shut her eyes. “I was afraid he’d left town.”

“I don’t think so.” Maya remembered what he’d said. “He grabbed Lance when the meeting was over. Said they had to go do something.”

“What?”

“He didn’t say. It seemed like a secret. Maybe it’s a surprise.”

“What kind of a surprise costs all our money? We’ve worked so hard to save it.”

“Don’t panic. There’s got to be an explanation.” She couldn’t think what it could be, though. She hoped Bart hadn’t decided to splurge on a new truck or a vacation or something that would set them back on their plans. Getting a place of their own was obviously a big priority for Maggie—and for him, given everything he’d been saying.

“I’ve been looking for work, but I haven’t found anything yet. If Bart leaves me—”

“He won’t leave you.” Maya hoped she was right. What was the man thinking? Lance would never act this way—

As if she would know anything about how Lance would act.

“I’ve got to go. Mom’s putting Katie to bed, and I said I’d be home soon. I had to tell someone, but I couldn’t admit to my parents what he did. Maya, what if it’s all really gone? What are we going to do?”

Maya didn’t know what to tell her. “I’ll call Lance. I’ll ask him to have Bart call you.”

Maggie nodded numbly.

“I’m sure it’s all going to work out,” Maya said as she left. She wished she could do more. When she called Lance, he didn’t answer. She left a message. Told him to have Bart call home.

And quickly slipped the phone back in her pocket when Stella walked in the front door.

“Was that Maggie?” she asked as she carried a bag of groceries into the kitchen. “Lord, what a mess.”

“I’ll clean up before bed.” Maya wished she could go to sleep now. The day had been too long.

“I’ll help. I know you’re working hard.”

“You’re working hard, too.”

How much more of this could they all take?
